The letters have positive and negative poles
« Thread Started on Oct 20, 2011, 5:04pm »

A central concept behind Kabbalah is that Creative (Divine) energy flows from Heaven to earth (from the Infinite to the finite) in step-down stages, represented by five worlds. Each world is less infinite, more concrete, than the previous one--until you get to our world (physical reality).

Another key concept is that these worlds were formed using the 22 Hebrew letters interacting within the 10-node structure called the Sefirot. Source: Sefer Yetirah, the earliest know book of the Kabbalah.

Combining these concepts, each of the 22 letters exists in five worlds and, like all other energy forms, has positive and negative poles. The positive pole emanates from the Infinite and steps-down in five stages to the finite. So, for example, the positive, Infinite pole of the letter MEM means to nurture or transform; while the negative, finite pole of MEM means to suffocate or stagnate. (Very much like the stereotypical Jewish mother.) Wherever MEM appears in Genesis, it carries this entire spectrum of energy possibility from nurturing to suffocating, and thus opens up a broad range of interpretation and translation.

Jeff has done some marvelous work digging into the earth for clues to the letters. I started at the other end and have been drawing down from the mystical. It will be interesting to see where we meet in the middle.

Our web site, www.holy-letters.com, introduces this unique interpretaton of the letters and provides opportunities to explore and comment on Genesis. It has just been launched and the comment section is still virtually bear. You can see comments for Genesis 1:1, Genesis 1:2, and Genesis 1:3.

There are also interpretations of all the two letter seeds (what Jeff calls Parent Roots). I have started matching our interpretation with those of Jeff and refining ours as I go along.

Shalom Barry,

I have briefly looked at your site and wanted to thank you for sharing it, and your insights into the meanings of the words, from the perspective you have.

One of the insights I remember that relates to the positive and negative aspects you bring out is with regard to the shin, sin. The shin has an 'sh' sound, similar to the sound make when a fire generates a flame...'shhhhhhhhh...' (positive aspect). It also has an 's' sound, similar to the sound made when you extinguish that fire...'ssssssssssssss...' (negative aspect).
